Do Affirmations Really Work?

Our brain is in a constant conversation with its self. It is often on autopilot, and the thoughts you have are heavily influenced by what you tell yourself.

Here’s the thing.

Your thoughts’ WILL affect how your FEEL.

If you want to feel good, you need to incorporate positive conversations in your mental dialogue. This is why how you speak out loud about yourself really matters. Even if you say something derogatory about yourself as a joke, your brain will internalize it and those harmful thoughts’ will affect how you feel.

An interesting fact about the brain is that sometimes it can’t tell the difference between reality and imagination. Thinking about positive experiences (even future ones) activate the same areas in the brain as if you are currently experiencing it.

Example Of Positive vs Negative Thoughts

You are going to a social event where you don’t know anyone and you are feeling anxious.

The anxiety comes from following thought patterns: “No one will like me”, I will have no one to talk to”, “everyone will see I am nervous”, “people there will be smarter than I am” etc.

Lets shift the conversation. Same scenario- different thoughts’: “Everyone will really like me”, “there will many people I will enjoy talking to”, “everyone will see what an awesome person I am”, “people there will have interesting things to talk about”.

The above are examples of affirmations you can tell yourself as you get ready for the event. It is a conscious decision to flip thoughts’ of anxiety and rephrase them to feel better.

Affirmations For Moms

Here 40 affirmations (collectively) for moms to help flip those negative thoughts’ upside down (or as my toddler would say “up’s and down”).

Its not about using all of these all the time. Pick 3-4 that you like and start there. I like saying them in front of the mirror. I also will stop what I am doing to be present with myself for a minute and then recite a few positive affirmations that are directly related to the negative thoughts’ I am having at the moment.

enjoy!

It’s Hard To Change The Way We Think

I have been writing a lot recently about mental load and invisible labor, often carried by women and moms. This has made me look closely at our family dynamics as well and I realize that the hardest things to do when shifting to positive habits, is changing the way we think. Negative thoughts’ will block you towards reaching your goals, or even having a good day.

Positive mom affirmations are really powerful and its a lost opportunity if you are not using them daily. However, if you think your negative feelings are due to depression, it is important to seek medical help as it is a health issue which won’t be resolved with affirmations.

I hope this post has helped you better understand how your brain works and why this simple tool can implement such positive change in your life.
